| Balf
and Hegykõ are famous fot their thermal baths. Several
palaces in Sopron and Vienna have been built with the limestone
exctracted from the quarry of Fertőrákos. The
breath-taking sight of the enormous caves reminds one of
the ancient Egyptian rock graves. The opera performances
in the quarry as well as the panorama from the hill of the
excavations are unforgettable.
Bükfürdõ is famous for the thermal spring.
The spring in Bükfürdõ with a water temperature
of 50 °C renders 1000 litre of water per minute, and
no Central-European thermal spring beats it.
The first Hungarian book, the New Testament, translated
by János Sylvester was printed in Sárvár, not far from Bükfürdõ. The Nádasdy
palace (Nádasdy-vár) is decorated with frescos
from 1653, depicting battle scenes of the Turkish wars. Rare
literary relics and weapons are on display in the Ferenc
Nádasdy Museum. Miracles of nature open up on 9 hectares
of Sárvár Arboretum: trees typical of this
region, such as robur, ash and alder trees grow there, japanese
magnolia (Magnolia kobus), Pyramid-oaks are also pianted
and rhododendrons blossom even in May. The internationally
renowned spa has made the town a popular holiday resort.
The saline water of the Thermal Baths is used to treat rheumatic
diseases, post-fractural complaints and gynaecological disorders.
It also facilitates general recuperation and improves overall
physical condition. Its use is recommended either in the
form of therapeutic treatment or self-cure in the home, using
bath salt, called 'Sárvár thermal crystal',
distilled from the water.
