WESTERN TRANSDANUBIA - GASTRONOMY

Fish and game specialities have been developed in this region of abundant forests, lakes and rivers.

Taste the authentic roast of Vas County, the potato-dumpling of the Kerka valley (called “gombuc” or “dödölle”) and the sweet bread, which was originally a special wedding dessert called “kálikó” in Vas and “perec” in the Õrség. These specialities are still served in certain traditional restaurants.

The Germans that live in Sopron are called “Poncihter” (which derives from the German “Bohnenzüchter”, i. e. bean-grower). They used to grow beans and would roast them mixed with flour (called “sterc”) make dumplings ("babgombóc"), strudels (babrétes), cones (babpogácsa) of them. All these dishes perferctly match various types of Hungarian wines, “Kékfrankos" the most famous red wine of Transdanubia.

Talking about wine, and trying to tempt tourists one should mention the vintage season celebrations around lake Fertõ or in the village of Cák (famous for its wine cellars). Fish-soup around Christmas time and mutton goulash during the days of vintage brew in giant stew-pots. Taste local specialities, discover this aspect of Transdanubia too.
