| In the course
of millions of years of geohistory, Southern Transdanubia
has guarded such natural treasures deep under the ground
as oil, coal and uranium, which are being mined in the region:
there are the thermal and medicinal waters of various compositions,
which gush forth from the depth at many places.
The most frequented spa, Harkány owes
its fame to its 63-64°C waters containing biologically
highly active sulfides. The waters and the mud are especially
recommended to those suffering from rheumatic and kinetic
ailments and for follow-up care of skin diseases. "Taking
the waters" is possible at the memorial
well-bearing the name of Vilmos Zsigmondy, who led the exploratory
borings in the second half of the 19th century, and the pump-room
located in the area of the open-air swimming-pool. Legend
has it that the devil ploughed Szársomlyó Hill,
and the furrows were filled with sulphuric water. Consisting
of sulphur in the form of dissolved gas, this type of water
is to be found nowhere else. Thanks to this natural asset,
the town has been a health resort for 200 years. The waters
of the Harkány thermal bath and spa are used to treat
all kinds of locomotor disorders, chronic gynaecological
inflammations and dermatological diseases and in the follow-up
treatment of accidents, fractures and arthritic inflammation
of the joints. They are also used as a drinking cure for
stomach complaints.
At Tamási, 38 km from laKe Balaton, visitors can
enjoy the beneficial effects of the 35-38°C medicinal
water. As a bathing cure, it is used mainly to heal kinetic
and gynecological diseases, and as a drinking cure, to prevent
caries.
The spa of Dombóvár-Gunaras is well worth
visiting for its medicinal waters. The thermal and medicinal
baths provide relief mainly for those suffering fror netic
and chronic infiammatory diseases. In the form of a drinking
cure, the water heals kinetic and chronic infiammatory diseases.
As a drinking cure, it alleviates gastric, bilious and intestinal
complaints. Those seeking recovery may also themselves of
the services of the hospital's physiotherapy unit. The town
and its environment abound in beauty spots. A protected venue
is the forest of Szigeterdő, with remnants of a fortress
from the time of the House of Árpád and a monument
erected to commemorate the 1848 Revolution and Freedom Fight.
At the Sütvénypuszta equestrian centre, visitors
may enjoy cross-country riding.
Zalakaros is famous for its
medicinal bath. Ten outdoor swimming-pools and a medicinal
centre await visitors to Granite Medicinal Bath (Gránit Gyógyfürdő). A mini zoo
and a horse riding school offer entertainment and recreation
in Behiákpuszta. Further sport facilities, like tennis,
fishing, hot-air balloons, hang-gliding and minigolf are also
available in Zalakaros.
