BALATON - INTRODUCTION

Lake Balaton, called the Hungarian Sea is not only the largest freshwater lake in Central Europe (with a water surface of 600 km2) but also Hungary's favorite and most frequented  resort. Lake Balaton is one of Hungary's most precious natural assets. Extending nearly 80 kilometers (50 miles) across the west of the country, its average depth is only under 10 feet (3 meters). Making the conditions just right for a pure enjoyment vacation!

Its shoreline is 195 km, its average depth is 3 m; at its deepest, at the well of Tihany, it is 12,4 m, at its widest, it is 14 km. The summer water temperature of 20-26 °C is warmer than the air in the morning and in the evening. The water and the silky mud of the lake are recommended for nervous complaints, anemia and nervous fatigue. The southern shores are ideal for small children because of the shallow water. Velvety sands cover the beach from Balatonaliga through Balatonszentgyörgy. The beach is an uninterrupted line of large and small resorts with bustling life, a paradise for worshippers of sun and water.
Between Balatonakarattya and Keszthely, there are approximately 25 lakeside resorts surrounded by hills on the northern lake shore. The innumerable sights in the villages and towns away from the lake offer memorable outings on cloudy days.

So naturally, sought most on Balaton is swimming, sailing, windsurfing and waterskiing. But there is the fishing, the tennis, the biking, the horseback riding - there is even skating, ice fishing and ice sailing in winter.

Lake Balaton and nearby towns are abundant with thermal springs also. Which means many therapeutic spas add to the lake's allure. Balatonfüred and Hévíz are just two that are big on the bubbly.

When the sun and the water call for some culture, the Lake Balaton region is by no means in short supply. Just go to Keszthely to have a look at the astounding Festetics Palace in all its Baroque splendor. Or the oldest Hungarian town, Székesfehérvár, where Hungary's kings were crowned over five centuries.

Come alone or with your family, with toddlers or adolescents, in horse-riding gear or on bicycle, in the burgeoning spring, sparkling summer, colourful autumn or even in the white, icy winter.

There is something in the multicoloured world of lake Balaton for everyone, a favourite place, a moment of adventure.
